Abstract

The Strengthened Code of Practice on Disinformation 2022 by the European Commission, based on the pioneering 2018 Code of Practice on Disinformation, is a policy initiative that aims to counter online disinformation. It contains 44 commitments and 128 specific measures that diverse industry stakeholders shall adhere to, e.g., major online platforms, players in the advertising industry, fact-checkers, research and civil society organisations. Examples of areas covered are demonetisation, transparency of political advertising, cooperation with fact-checkers and researcher access to data, as well as empowering users. Moreover, it aligns with the European Commission’s commitment to a transparent, safe and trustworthy online environment.
