At the ECREA Communication & Democracy Section Off-Year Conference, held in Rotterdam on 22–23 May 2025, Mari-Liisa Parder and Marie Rathmann shared findings from a collaborative sub-study conducted as part of the DIACOMET project. The presentation, “AI in Public Communication: Governance and Accountability Mechanisms for Democratic Control” contributed to the conference’s central theme: “Automating Democracy: AI Use Between Social Justice and Social Control”.
Drawing on research carried out in eight European countries, the study examines key risks and governance challenges associated with the use of AI in public communication – in AI’s entire lifecycle. It identifies recurring governance and accountability mechanisms, offering insight into how both national and supranational actors navigate the complexities of responsible AI.
We were happy to participate in the vibrant discussions on AI, democracy and media governance that the conference provided!
