Abstract

The “Guidelines for Safeguarding Journalistic Independence” at the Austrian daily newspaper DER STANDARD emphasize the importance of independence in the work of editors. These guidelines are based on the journalistic understanding outlined in the Code of Ethics for the Austrian Press. The code specifically addresses the issue of private and business interests, including that content should not be influenced by the personal economic interests of editors or third parties. Additionally, journalists are expected not to use their reporting for personal or others’ advantage and to use sources responsibly. These guidelines aim to create a framework that enables independent and critical journalism at DER STANDARD. Violations will result in disciplinary consequences.
