Abstract

This Handbook for Doctors and Social Media was created by the Royal Dutch Medical Association (KNMG), which wants to promote the use of social media among doctors as it can contribute positively to improving the quality of healthcare. This Handbook contains guidance and recommendations for doctors and medical students on how to handle social media with care. The Handbook covers areas such as the opportunities of social media, guaranteeing confidentiality, and the distinction between public and private. According to KNMG, while deviating from the recommendations in this Handbook does not mean that you are liable to be punished, you do run a greater risk of being held personally or legally (e.g. disciplinary or civil law) accountable for your actions.
