Abstract

The Media Act is a Dutch law enacted in 2008 and (except for some articles) entered into force on 1 January 2009. The law regulates admission to the broadcasting system and sets requirements for public broadcasters to ensure media pluralism. Among other things, the Media Act addresses the public broadcaster, commercial broadcasting, other media institutions, broadcasting advertising and sponsorship, and the protection of young television viewers. The Dutch Media Authority (Commissariaat voor de Media) monitors on behalf of the government whether radio and television stations comply with the Media Act.
