Abstract

The Austrian section of the non-governmental organisation the Red Cross has implemented a Social Media Policy to address the use of social media platforms, recognizing the potential benefits and opportunities that social media provides for their volunteers and employees to publicly share their activities, values, and principles. The document addresses the legal framework, guidelines for political engagements, employees’ own businesses, dealing with criticism, as well as an appropriate tone and the publication of photos on (private) social media channels. The policy applies to all voluntary and full-time employees of the Red Cross, and violations may result in consequences under association or employment law.
