Our partners from the Institute for Comparative Media and Communication Studies (CMC) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) and the University of Klagenfurt (AAU) were invited to contribute to the Austrian UNESCO Commission’s event “TikTok, AI and Democracy: Your Decisions on the Internet” on 25 November 2025. The event brought together students, scientists and digital-literacy practitioners to explore how algorithms, platforms and online communication shape democratic participation.
Throughout the day, students engaged in interactive workshops addressing digital decision-making, media literacy and the societal implications of AI. The opening keynote by Youth Representative Jakob Mohl set the tone by emphasizing young people’s vital role in shaping responsible and inclusive digital spaces.
Within this context, DIACOMET researchers Christina Krakovsky, Marina Lindmeyr, Marie Rathmann and trainee Katharina Buschkotte led the workshop “Digital Reality Check – Deine Entscheidungen im Netz”. Together with the participants, they examined real-life dilemmas around AI-generated content, online conflict, fake news and hate speech. The workshop encouraged critical reflection on how digital technologies influence perceptions, emotions and interactions – core themes within DIACOMET’s mission to strengthen digital resilience and foster constructive public dialogue.
The date of the event – 25 November – carried particular significance as it marked the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the start of the global 16 Days of Activism campaign. In line with DIACOMET’s commitment to inclusive, safe and equitable digital environments, we remain dedicated to empowering girls and young women to navigate online spaces confidently and responsibly.
