From 23 to 25 June 2025, the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) in Vienna hosted the “AI meets Humanities & Social Sciences” conference – a dynamic forum dedicated to exploring the evolving relationship between artificial intelligence and research. The event featured a diverse programme of expert presentations, poster sessions, and thought-provoking discussions on the ethical, societal, and academic implications of AI technologies.
The DIACOMET project was prominently represented in the conference agenda through both a compelling poster presentation and a well-received expert talk. The poster, titled “Responsible Use of AI in Public Communication: Discourses About Accountability Measures and Governance Options – A Comparative Analysis in Europe”, by Marie Rathmann, Tobias Eberwein (CMC), Krisztina Rozgonyi (CMC), Laura Amigo (Università della Svizzera italiana), Marko Milosavljević (University of Ljubljana), Mari-Liisa Parder (University of Tartu), and Colin Porlezza (Università della Svizzera italiana) offered a comparative overview of governance frameworks and accountability strategies for AI in the field of public communication. A particular highlight of the event was the expert presentation by Colin Porlezza (Università della Svizzera italiana, Lugano), titled “Journalism Studies and Artificial Intelligence: Towards a Critical Research Agenda”.
Overall, the conference provided a valuable platform for cross-disciplinary exchange and highlighted the importance of collaborative approaches to shaping responsible AI governance. DIACOMET’s active participation reaffirmed its strong commitment to advancing accountability, transparency, and democratic values in the context of AI-driven communication and media systems.
