Abstract

The core values expressed in the The Code of Conduct of the Estonian Bar Association are independence, confidentiality, protection of the client’s interests, and honor and dignity. The Code states that a lawyer must not submit to pressure from public opinion, state or local authorities, or any other pressure that may impair their independence. Lawyers are prohibited from making disparaging judgments about other lawyers and law firms. In addition, they should not make derogatory statements about any of their colleagues. A lawyer should avoid conflicts of interests. The section concerning Relations with the public states that lawyers always represent themselves in the media and in public, unless they are not specifically authorised to appear on behalf of the bar association.
