Abstract

The core values expressed in the “The Code of Conduct of Estonian Bar Association” are independence, confidentiality, protection of the client’s interests, and honor and dignity. The Code states that a lawyer must not submit to pressure from public opinion, state or local authorities, or any other pressure that may impair the lawyer’s independence. Lawyers are prohibited from making dispersing judgement about other lawyers and law firms. In addition, one should not make derogatory statements about a colleague. A lawyer should avoid conflicting interests. The section “Relations with the public” states that lawyers always represent themselves in the media and in public, unless they are not specifically authorised to appear on the behalf of the bar association.
