Abstract

In their formally non-binding “Status of Journalists and Journalism Ethics: IFJ Principles” the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) advocates for the role of professional journalists in promoting a democratic media culture. They emphasize that democracy relies on the expansion of freedom of expression and social justice, with the media playing a significant role. The IFJ asserts that the media should adhere to professional and ethical principles of press freedom that are essential for the public’s ability to make responsible decisions. Furthermore, this set of principles deals with access to the profession, clause of conscience, editorial independence, self-regulation and ethics of journalism, as well as a standard of professional conduct.
