Abstract

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has published “Guidelines on the Personal Use of Social Media”, recognizing the value of these platforms for communication and collaboration. The guidelines aim to help staff navigate social media ethically and strategically while minimizing potential risks to themselves, the individuals involved, and the organization. UNHCR staff are, for example, expected to act impartially, practice discretion, and refrain from making public statements on controversial issues. Violations of these guidelines could lead to a formal investigation and disciplinary actions.
