In this episode of the DIACOMET podcast, we spoke with Marta Kos, former journalist and diplomat and current European Commissioner for Enlargement.
Our conversation explored how her previous roles have shaped her understanding of dialogue and public communication. Our guest reflected on the key elements of responsible communication in today’s polarized society and digital landscape, including the importance of honesty and the value and limitations of dialogue. We discussed disinformation and the strategic manipulation of public opinion, including the most common narratives, their goals, and how EU policies and responses are addressing them. The conversation also highlighted the importance of independent media and non-governmental organizations.
“I get questions: ‘Why did you talk to this politician, he is an autocrat? You can’t talk to him or to her.’ But I will always defend talking to everybody. The easiest part is not to talk to anybody; it is sometimes more difficult to stay in a dialogue and have the guts to explain why this is important. Dialogue really helps people who disagree to remain part of the same society,” our guest emphasized.
