Digital communication enormously expands the number of ways people can interact and engage, but also challenges European societies by spread of conflict instigation, hate speech, and increasing amount of disinformation. The many initiators of destructive communication acts are various actors with diverse interests, who are not bound by either professional or ethical rules or obligations to distribute truthful information or stand for its reliability. The existing framework of public communication does not empower citizens to influence the ways the media institutions and actors operate in European democracies.
DIACOMET advanced ethical, inclusive and accountable public communication by developing Dialogic Communication Ethics (DCE), an interdisciplinary framework that understands communication ethics as a shared responsibility of all actors participating in public communication, while fostering civic resilience against information distortions and promoting civic accountability.
Through extensive research and collaboration with civil society and other stakeholders across Europe, the project further developed the concepts of civic accountability and civic resilience and translated them into practical tools and resources. These include the Principles for Dialogue-Supportive Communication, the Inclusive Accountability Toolbox, the educational game Dialogue Lab, an online discussion forum, an NGO Network, and Policy Recommendations.
Together, these results support citizens, organisations and communities in addressing ethical challenges in contemporary public communication and contribute to stronger civic participation and democratic resilience in Europe.
